You’ve seen people compare what’s going on in the world with various movies and series such as The Matrix, They Live, Divergent, The Hunger Games, Equilibrium, Stepford Wives, Truman Show, The Stand, Surrogates, EXistenZ, Repo Men, Demolition Man, A.I. Gattaca, Contagion, Twelve Monkeys, Inception, The Island, In Time, Minority Report, Gamer, Aeon Flux, Limitless, Total Recall, The 6th Day, Face Off, Thirteenth Floor, Unbreakable, and many others.

As a former Stargate SG-1 junkie, having watched the series many, many times over the years, I have often found myself comparing various things that are going on in the world to specific episodes and trying to bring it up in conversation:

“Do you remember that particular episode in Stargate where Teal’c gets bitten by an alien mosquito and starts transforming into another species?”. “What about the “Link” that connected an entire civilisation to an AI-based hive-mind database?” “What about the mind-control technology that can change people’s memories and make them believe they committed atrocities?” “What about the ship that carried an entire civilization—the genetic material/DNA of the entire species, including their plants and animals—wouldn’t that be a more likely, more practical, and more realistic scenario than the story of Noah’s Ark?”

“No, I never watched Stargate.”

“Sigh.”

Damn, I wish my friends had been SG1 junkies, so they knew what I was talking about :)

None of them will commit to watching the whole series (who has time these days?), but they said if I tell them which specific episodes to watch, they’ll do that, so this is my quick episode list so that I can find the episodes easier if they ever come up in conversation.

I don’t want to commit any more time to this post, and can already think of some I missed, but I’ve got a lot more important research in the works than comparing different things we discuss to old Stargate episodes that no one is likely to watch anyway :)

Replicators = representative of Artificial Intelligence and it’s only desire/function is to “replicate”

Transhumanism

Upgrades (Transhumanism tech gives SG1 superhuman powers)
A Tok’ra archaeologist arrives at the SGC with newly discovered technology, giving the SG-1 team superhuman powers.

Rite of Passage (experimenting on kids where they feel forced/compelled to return to the forest at a certain age)
Cassandra mysteriously falls ill, sending SG-1 back to her home planet – where they uncover a dark Goa’uld secret.

119 Tin Man (Transhumanism – Reminds me of the experiments they’ve been doing on humans – both the nefarious and the “cyborg-matrix-like human upgrades” they use as a sales-pitch to get people on board. This episode shows how a consciousness can be transported into a robot and the “robot” doesn’t even know he’s not the original. The entire team gets these “upgrades”, but it malfunctions on Teal’c.)

When SG-1 visits the underground warehouse of an advanced alien civilization, the area’s caretaker transplants their minds into robotic duplicates – a “gift” of immortality. Season 1, Disc 4 | Full Transcript | Clip | Clip 2

Prototype (Goa’uld-human hybrid – genetically-engineered human)
SG-1 finds a genetically advanced Goa’uld-human hybrid created by Anubis, and returns him to Earth for study. But even keeping him alive may not be worth the risk.

Flesh and Blood (accelerated-age of baby)

Revisions (Dome, People linked via central computer)
DVD DISC: Season 7, Disc 2, Episode 705 | Full Transcript | Clip
The team gates to a climate-controlled environment amidst a toxic wasteland, whose citizens are all linked to a central computer.

SG-1 go to a planet that has a dome complex protecting the remaining citizens from the toxic waste that destroyed their world. They go there wearing hazmat suits and pass through the barrier into a holographic garden, where they find a city of people. A meeting of four council members convenes, and they start explaining how they got there, about the Stargate, etc., and the meeting suddenly stops as the council members all access the information from the “Link,” – a device they are always wearing that provides them with the knowledge. They stay overnight, and the next day, there are only 4 members of the council; the woman is missing. They ask about her, and they say there hasn’t been a woman on their council. (The Link instructed the woman to walk outside the dome and basically kill herself for population control because the dome is slowly shrinking, and so the computer automatically dealt with it by killing people and then updating the link so that everyone’s memory of that person was removed.) The link basically works like Wikipedia and Google these days – where they “re-write history on the fly.”

Making people think they're crazy when they're not

Crystal Skull (institutionalised grandfather is not crazy after all)
An alien artefact causes Daniel to disappear, and the team looks for help from his institutionalised grandfather.

Legacy (infected with a weapon that makes you hallucinate)
When Daniel goes insane, SG-1 must deal with the legacy of Machello’s anti-Goa’uld technology.

Virtual Reality Technology

The Gamekeeper (Virtual Reality Tech – a device that transports you into a simulation, that replays your memories as if you’re really there, activating your most painful memories, that others can watch for entertainment) DVD DISC: Season 2, Disc 1 (Episode 204)

Avatar (same device as above when used inside SG command for “training purposes”)
Teal’c is trapped in a virtual reality simulation, in which he must defend the base from a Goa’uld super-soldier incursion.

Eugenics, Genetics, and Genocide

The Other Side
(Eugenics, Genocide, and Unmanned weapons)
DVD DISC: Season 4, Disc 1 (Episode 402) A warring alien race offers to exchange their advanced technology for Earth’s help in defeating their enemy.

Basically, a race of people called “The Eurondans” is at war with another race of people on the planet, they call them “breeders” because they are a diverse race with “no respect for genetic purity,” breeding without care or plan. (Sound familiar already? lol). The Eurondans, who live underground, are killing the rest of the people on the planet by poisoning the surface, because they are “not of their kind” and also preserving their own Caucasian/Nordic-looking “blonde-haired, blue-eyed” clones in stasis until they win the war and can clean up the surface. They are around 100 years ahead of Earth in technology).

Scorched Earth (Sort of the Noah’s ark of DNA Genetic material, planet transformation and frequency)
DVD DISC: Season 4, Disc 3, Episode 409
SG-1 is caught in a conflict between two civilizations trying to colonize the same planet.

An enormous alien ship (some two miles in diameter) is slowly moving across the planet’s surface, destroying everything in its path with a 20-mile-long energy curtain. The vessel is terraforming the planet for a type of life unlike any they know—sulfur-based life rather than carbon-based life. The terraformer will render this planet inhospitable to the Enkarans who live there. SG-1 is transported aboard the advanced vessel, where they are greeted by Lotan, a bio-mechanical lifeform created by the ship in the image of the Enkarans. The ship carries an extinct species, “The Gadmeer,” who were a 10,000-year-old, highly advanced, and peace-loving people, overcome by a stronger military power. Rather than embrace extinction, the Gadmeer filled the ship with genetic samples of its race, and of plants and animals from their world. The ship’s computers were filled with all the knowledge, art, music, and philosophy of the Gadmeer.

What it reminds me of…

  • The music that is preserved sounds horrendous to human ears (but was obviously music that resonated with the other race).
    • (The frequency changes of our own music, the 528hz debate, the change in Schumann resonances, the frequency war on humanity right now)
  • The genetic material preserved of their people, plants, and animals, is how I really imagine the “Noah’s Ark” story would happen. It’s a lot easier to transport and preserve the entire race of species with glass slides.
    • The genetic material being taken from the entire population in the past 3 years.
    • Eugenics.
    • The DNA weapons that they can already create.
  • Lotan – looks human, but was “created”.
  • The needing to “remove carbon” from the planet to transform the planet for the new species. (hmm, makes you wonder…)
  • The Gadmeer appear reptilian rather than humanoid.
