Been grossing out about Urine Therapy for a few years but thought since I’m in a more open-minded state at the moment, I’ll try and get a little educated instead of freaked-out :)
Brought to mind recently by the amount that is “wasted” (no pun intended) since I’ve been using the portable toilet in the van, as well as a lot of self-sufficient websites that I’ve been reading since getting into this van-dwelling lifestyle, re-use both the urine (& the fecal matter!) as a natural fertilizer for their crops & compost, etc. That has always seemed pretty logical to me since we already use animal manure .. and I grew up in a small town where the men would urinate on the trees so that wasn’t an ‘ick factor’ use of recycling nature.
Then I also started spotting it again on various Facebook groups I’m a member of (natural healing, cancer groups, and pineal gland type of alternative groups). It keeps popping up and I thought hmmm.. maybe I’ll look into it further, not really knowing whether I would actually do it or not (the ‘ick’ factor still exists) but just to get more “educated”.
I love learning things that I don’t know – especially if it’s interesting and controversial and something that the masses would baulk at… lol.. I think that’s “my thing”.. finding and discussing things that seem a bit “taboo”… and making them less ‘taboo’ by having conversations about it.. until I no longer have any kind of internal “reaction”.
Such is the case with this. As I’ve been researching this over the past 2 weeks.. I’m really not at all grossed-out about it anymore.. it has zero reaction for me.. and I could very easily see myself carrying a conversation about it with others who are also open-minded.
I started with a couple of documentaries on it, then moved to various YouTube videos with people proclaiming the benefits they have received, then onto the forums/websites, and then finally the medical research & books.
All in all, I think it’s something that should actually be looked at with broader mindsets and something that can be beneficial, especially if water was scarce/polluted or in certain conditions that people have been unsuccessful at treating… and it’s something that you always have ‘on-hand’.. it’s not out of reach no matter what your financial or physical circumstances may be.
It seems the worst ‘side-effects’ that I’ve come across (so far) have been:
1.) the “ick” factor
2.) the social conditioning surrounding it being a ‘toxic’ waste product
3.) if the patient has any kind of faulty kidney-filtration system – (a kidney or bladder or urinary infection, etc), they might get an over-dose of urea which can cause gout
Here are some of the notes I kept whilst researching (scroll to the end for references and for links to videos and other resources):
For almost the entire course of the 20th century, unknown to the public, doctors and medical researchers have been proving in both laboratory and clinical testing that our own urine is an enormous source of vital nutrients, vitamins, hormones, enzymes and critical antibodies that cannot be duplicated or derived from any other source. They use urine for healing cancer, heart disease, allergies, auto-immune diseases, diabetes, asthma, infertility, infections, wounds and on and on — yet we’re taught that urine is a toxic waste product.
Far from being a toxic body waste, it is an incredibly versatile, far-reaching and effective medicinal agent.
Urine is a “sterile” fluid containing 95% of water, 2.5% of urea and the remaining 2.5% is a mixture of vitamins, minerals, salts, proteins, hormones and enzymes.
Before we are born, we drink well over half a litre per day of this liquid. The amniotic fluid that surrounds human infants in the womb is primarily urine. The fetus also breathes it in continually; this is essential for proper development of the lungs. Doctors also believe that the softness of baby skin and the ability of inutero infants to heal quickly without scarring after pre-birth surgery is due to the therapeutic properties of the urine-filled amniotic fluid.
Our bodies are constantly working to maintain homeostasis. Like any effective feedback loop, our bodies need information on what it has produced previously in order to update and improve its current conditions.
Urine is a sort of information card which registers the condition of the blood. When that information is carried back to the body, the body can consequently react according to this feedback; it will normally do this in an appropriate and precise way. The body is an extremely advanced and intelligent system.
Ingesting your own urine closes the information feedback loop which informs your body of what’s currently missing and what it needs to produce to achieve and maintain homeostasis.
Our bodies are natural chemical factories.
With information on what you’re lacking or may have in excess your body goes to work producing or slowing production of whatever it needs to create a perfect biochemical balance. Many internal and external health issues result from biochemical/hormonal imbalances. UT is your body’s most comprehensive and effective means of assessing and correcting itself.
Urine therapy can also be seen as a form of self-vaccination: certain bodily substances which have been removed from the body, some of which may have been produced as a result of illness, are reintroduced into the body in small amounts. These substances are reabsorbed into the blood through either the intestines or the skin. According to this hypothesis, the immune system is then given the chance to react appropriately.
“If your urine is so good for you, why does your body excrete it?”
One of the liver’s most important functions is detoxification of the blood. The liver removes poisonous substances from the blood and either stores them or secretes them into the gall bladder.
In the latter case, the poisonous substances end up as bile in the intestinal canal. They then leave the body in the form of defecation.
After the blood is detoxified by the liver, it flows to the kidneys at a rate of about 1200 ml of blood per minute. Inside the kidneys, the blood is continuously filtered through a huge system of minute tubules called nephron which sift out excess water, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, salts, and hundreds of other elements including vital antibodies, urea and uric acid.
A large portion of these key physiological elements are reabsorbed into the bloodstream, but a certain amount of critical blood constituents are pooled by the kidney into a liquid which doctors refer to as a “plasma ultrafiltrate” (we call it urine). Much of this sterile, nutrient filled ultrafiltrate, or urine, is reabsorbed and some remains in the kidney for a period of time and is eventually released into a tube called the urethra which empties the urine into the bladder where it is finally excreted.
Your kidneys balance the amount of water & nutrients delivered into your bloodstream and through the urine will excrete whatever amounts from the blood that isn’t needed at that specific point in time.
The concentrations of every element in our blood are carefully and strictly controlled and this is done by the kidneys. Too much water in the blood is fatal. Too much salt in the blood is deadly. Too high a concentration of any nutrient could kill you. This is why the kidneys excrete valuable elements from the body — too much of any good thing isn’t good for your health.
Your kidneys aren’t doing damage to your body by getting rid of particular excess nutrients, they’re just simply excreting the precise amount not presently needed by your body at a given time. And the same goes for practically every nutrient, enzyme, hormone, antibody, etc. that are critical to your survival — the kidneys keep what your body needs at a certain time, and excretes what it isn’t momentarily using into your urine.
Urea is an FDA-approved medicinal agent that doctors, pharmaceutical companies, cosmetic companies and researchers utilize in an amazing variety of therapeutic modalities. Because of its remarkable and comprehensive anti-neoplastic (anti-tumor) properties, it’s presently being used in anti-cancer drugs and is extensively studied for use in cancer treatments.
The theory ofimplies that the body is capable, through energetic exchange within the body itself, to certain substances or molecules into other ones.
Short-circuiting the system by ingesting one’s own secreted body fluids might stimulate the transmutational forces within and challenge the body to transform unusable substances into usable ones without being constantly disturbed by new external input. This would specifically apply to fasting on urine.
Applying your own bodily substances in an attempt to heal can lead to a considerably broadened outlook on the intelligence and power of the body, and can increase your appreciation and love for yourself as a physical and spiritual being. Instead of regarding excretions (really just a part of yourself) as enemies, you regard them as your helpers. This healthier way of seeing yourself might well have a powerful healing effect on your body. Urine therapy confronts us with a very concrete ‘healer within’ which works both on a mechanistic and on an energetic level. The latter implies that urine, as a holographic substance, can affect all levels of being, from the physical, through the electromagnetic fields of the emotions and the mind, up to the subtler genetic vibrational information of the soul.

Drinking urine is a smart way to survive in situations where water is scarce or unsafe to drink. Drinking polluted water can cause serious, often fatal, illnesses and urine is a perfect alternative: if drunk fresh, it quenches thirst without presenting any danger and is always available.
- Some people drink “all” of their urine – every drop.
- Some people drink just the morning urine (a higher level of hormonal discharge takes place at night when the body completely relaxes and restores itself – morning urine is therefore the most rich in vital substances).
- Some people drink just the 3am/4am urine (when the urine is most rich in melatonin – deeper sleep/relaxation, calmer mood).
- Some people drink only fresh & some only aged.
- Some collect just the middle stream of the first morning urine (the first part rinses the urinary passage clean, so the urine will be as sterile as possible & the last part sometimes contains sediment and is of little value).
- Some people drink several glasses a day, others just a drop a day, some just one glass a day, etc.
- Some people recommend to use the first urine after sexual intercourse (during the process of sexual stimulation certain hormones are released in the higher endocrinal glands which have a regenerating effect on the body for men as well as women).
Every book/research/article and forum comment had a different suggestion and yet all seemed to have similar results, so I think if you were going to start doing this – just do what you are comfortable with – trust your instincts.
- The most common recommendation across the board seemed to be for at least 1 fresh glass once or twice a day.
Everything you eat and drink has an effect on your body and consequently on your urine. The healthier your dietary habits are, the better your urine will taste. Urine therapy in itself does not perform miracles. Unless you provide your body with the essential nutrients, it will not possess the raw materials needed to maintain good health.
If you eat healthily and consciously, your urine will contain many essential nutrients which can be reused. Even so, the body may have a deficiency of certain nutrients if they are not supplemented by a complete range of foods. In the long run, this may result in illnesses and ailments.
The human body is not made to digest and absorb the many harmful additives to which we are nowadays exposed. Chemical products and radiation added to food products have been proven to be harmful.
The recommended range of foods consists of fresh vegetables and fruit, whole grains, seeds, nuts, bean, natural sweeteners such as honey, and a limited use of dairy products, protein, salt, processed, synthetic, sugar, flour, canned-goods, etc.
Urine therapy is most beneficial if your diet contains no alcohol, tobacco products, coffee, junk foods & meat.
Keep using the same dropper bottle throughout the process.
Take one drop of urine per whatever size glass dropper bottle you have (you can get these at most health food stores or online in amber glass, green glass, blue cobalt glass in all sizes.)
- You take the drop of urine and put it in dropper bottle of purified water.
- Shake or tamp against palm 40-50 x.
- Then take a drop of that with the dropper from the bottle and empty the bottle.
- Refill bottle with purified water and place the drop you kept in the dropper from the first succession.
You have now made a homeopathic remedy of a 2x potency.
You can do this with ANY substance you want to make a remedy from (pollen, foods, cleaners, anything). To make a stronger more potent remedy, you just keep repeating the process. Even though it is more diluted, it is actually much stronger.
Do not make it stronger than 6x unless you have taken the lower potency for at least a week or more.
