Some of these images are life-changing, and should be world-changing. And definitely the path I will be taking…

The inspiration in this post are the following: “Foodscaping”, “Earthships”, and “Food Forests” – when I see posts like this, I honestly think “wow, there is hope for the human race yet!”

(Foodscaping & Food Forests are very similar in that they both involve growing your own food, but read on to see the differences)

Foodscaping

First life-changing inspiration to share is this one.. “Foodscaping” (nearly 48,000 shares currently!):

Foodscaping Geneva

Called “Foodscaping”  Geneva, Switzerland. Each yard is a vegetable garden and neighbors consult and plan what each will grow so they can trade. Imagine if we did this everywhere?

Foodscaping is called Schrebergärtens in Germany:

Across Germany there is an area the size of 60,000 football pitches in little plots apparently. Originally conceived as a way to help poorer citizens to obtain better nutrition and enjoy time outdoors in the 19th century, the concept of the allotment was pioneered by doctor Daniel Gottlob Moritz Schreber, after whom the German word of allotment – Schrebergarten – is named (my new hero).

An average Schrebergarten measures 370 square metres, and there are approximately a million in Germany alone.

Food Forests

Dream of a life where the homeless don’t go hungry? Where you have an abundance of fruit, vegetables, herbs, and more – within a metre of wherever you are? This doesn’t have to be a dream, this can be a reality, if we just think a bit differently and take some action – very easy action!

Melbourne Food Forest Experiment
Photo: permaculturenews.org

Permaculture – a system that has been successfully growing plants without human intervention. This photo is of a Melbourne backyard experiment.. an experiment in an inner-urban backyard of a city! It took him 3 months to setup, and this is the result after just two and a half years. It cost approx $600 to setup including irrigation (but not including plants), and has thrived despite Melbourne’s very strict water-restrictions!
