Anathema, in common usage, is something or someone detested or shunned. In its other main usage, it is a formal excommunication. i.e. “dedicated to eternal damnation”
Something that one absolutely and positively cannot stand is anathema. Garlic, stakes and daylight is anathema to vampires. Kryptonite to Superman. Silver bullet to a werewolf.
