Damn Sexy Bookmarks

I love this new Social Bookmarking plugin released today over at the Official Wordpress Plugin Directory.

It’s based on the SexyBookmarks plugin from eight7teen.com but with the following additions:

  • Customisable display order of bookmarks.
  • Uses WP Custom Fields to store the short URL for each post/page. This minimizes the need to make a remote request for a short URL each time the post or page is processed.
  • Fix to remove inline CSS when DamnSexyBookmarks is displayed in the feed.
  • Added an option to hide or display DamnSexyBookmarks in feeds.
  • Added an option to hide “Sharing is Caring” or “Sharing is Sexy”.

I quickly installed it on this blog (see end of post for "real" example), and although the config page looks a little screwy on my blog (nothing new since 2.7.1 – a lot of my fave plugins are a bit screwy looking in the backend lol) and the RSS option didn’t work for me (page not found when someone clicks on it), it looks awesome and it’s a keeper for now, and I finally have a better working "Twitter" ReTweet option (always wanted the RT to go to me when someone RT’d my urls) so that I could personally thank the retweeter :)

Includes Delicious, Reddit, Digg, Stumble, Technorati, MySpace, BlinkList, Furl, Yahoo, Mixx, DesignFloat, eMail, RSS, NewsVine, Devmarks, Script & Style, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google Bookmarks.

Try it out today on your blog – Download here

We’re glad you like the plugin. Just wanted to let you know that me and Norman will be working in unison from now on to better and further develop the plugin as a single plugin rather than trying to “compete” with each other with two separate plugins.

We both feel that we’ll make much better headway and produce much higher quality outcomes this way.

We’ll be integrating Norman’s upgrades to the original SexyBookmarks menu very shortly (v2.2) and releasing it for download.

I use Damn Sexy Bookmarks on my blog site… but in my RSS fee, the buttons show up as a link “Array” Is there a place I can change what that says?

Thanks for your help and this awesome plugin!

@Richard – Hiya Richard, happens for me too, on all of my sites.. so today, I’m going to download the latest update (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/sexybookmarks/) released last week and see if it resolves it.. I did write a comment similar to yours on the authors website but that was before or “as” they were merging the 2 programmers together so Im not sure if it was looked at.. I’ll report back here if the update works or not.. wish me luck.. :)

@Richard – Well.. um.. no success.. in fact, now I’m going to disable the plugin completely on this site until a future version is released.. I dont know if its because I previously had DamnSexyBookmarks installed and that in uninstalling that and installing “SexyBookmarks”, it has interfered in someway, but with the “new version”, I can’t make any modifications to the backend.. can’t untick any of the ones I dont want, or make any changes. It’s probably a permissions thing, but I don’t have time to troubleshoot it any further.. :)

@Richard – Installed it perfectly @ my other domain http://ches.ws – works beautifully.. probably something to do with all the zillions of plugins I have installed on this blog as to why it isnt working here :)

@Richard & @penny: I had the same problem. Not sure why this problem happens to a few of us, but I was able to resolve “array” problem.
Basically, after downloading the plugin, open the file damn-sexy-bookmarks.php in wordpad or your favourite editor, scroll to line 335 in bookmark_list_item() function. Replace lines 335 and 336 from:
    $bookmarks[$name],
    $bookmarks[$name]
    to:
    $bookmarks[$name]['share'],
    $bookmarks[$name]['share']
    This should fix the problem.

I hope it helps. I just found this blog when searching for solution, hopefully, it will help whoever searches for one.

@Penny – I believe I got to the source of the problem and described my whole investigation path on my blog (http://www.hackcorp.com/damnsexybookmarks-array/). In brief, there are quite a few sources to download the source from. The project has been migrated and when searching for damnsexybookmarks, you end up on the discontinued project page and download the old code. The new name for this code is sexybookmarks and that is what we should have searched for. Hope this helps everyone having the same problem. :)

Sorry, the last link was not placed correctly, it is http://www.hackcorp.com/damnsexybookmarks-array/
Also the newer version that is called sexybookmarks has more options, about 4 times more social bookmarking places and more backgrounds.

Hi – love this plugin :)

Is there anyway to customise your background image. please forgive me if this is a really dumb question but i had a little explore within the files and also searched for a tutorial – didnt find anything!

would appreciate help/a reference from anyone reading :)

    thanks!

@emma – You can change the background in the style.css but I’ve never done it, but found where you can do it.
    Go to Plugins -> Editor
    Select Plugin to Edit: “SexyBookmarks”
It will give you a list of the files that the plugin uses, and a few of them are .css files – the one you want is: sexybookmarks/css/style.css
I’m not sure what mess you might get yourself in while editing the background though because the images of the icons themselves are grabbed from the sexy-sprite.png which is located in the images folder – which is a white/transparent background..

@Penny – Thanks for this – I just read that you can locate the image in sexybookmarks plugin folder, its called sexy-trans.png.

does this mean i can avoid trying to modify the css because i can directly edit the image and just save with same name overwriting the old version?

@emma – I think it’s worth a try… since the css is pointing to a transparent image, that might just do the trick.. back it up first and let us know how you went :))
