Animated Favicons for your blog

Found another neat site today, this one creates favicons from your pictures and can also create animated favicons.

It’s free.. try it out: HTML-Kit Favicons

You can even add words to the animation if that’s your cup of tea.

I made one for my Arabic Study in Australia website:

favicon Animated Favicons for your blog to

  • animated favicon1 Animated Favicons for your blog (animated)
  • preview 16x16 Animated Favicons for your blog (static)
  • animated favicontext Animated Favicons for your blog (scrolling text)

You can add a favicon to your web page by uploading favicon.ico to your website and inserting the following HTML tag inside the <head> … </head> section of your web page.

<link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”favicon.ico” >

Optional: if you would like to display the animated favicon, upload animated_favicon1.gif as well and insert the following HTML tags.

<link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”favicon.ico” >
<link rel=”icon” href=”http://pennybutler.com/wp-content/uploads/animated_favicon12.gif” type=”image/gif” >

To add this to your WordPress blog.. (Based on 2.7)

  1. Upload favicon.ico and animated_favicon1.gif to your public_html directory

  2. Go to Appearance -> Editor
    themeeditor Animated Favicons for your blog
  3. Choose "Header (header.php)" from the list of files to Edit
    themefiles Animated Favicons for your blog
  4. Find "</head>" and add the code depending on which favicon you have uploaded just above the </head>

Works great – see my study in australia site to see the animated one in action!

**Note: if you have your permalink structure where you have /category/post-title, then using the code above won’t pickup your favicon for your category pages.

For example.. for my Study in Australia site, I had to change the above code to this instead to make it work on every post:

<link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”http://arabstudyaustralia.com/favicon.ico” >
<link rel=”icon” href=”http://pennybutler.com/wp-content/uploads/animated_favicon11.gif” type=”image/gif” >
</head>
