Code for 404 Page in WordPress 2.7.1
If someone types in an address or follows a link that no longer exists, it will remove the “slug” from the domain name and do a search within your blog for similar posts, then redirects them to the first match.
If it cannot find anything, it will redirect to your custom 404 page.
