Custom Favicon Wordpress Plugins

I’ve always used MaxBlogPress’s Favicon Generator to quickly create my favicons, but today I found a new plugin that allows for custom-made favicons called Favicon Generator. Exactly what one of my clients was looking for – an easy way to upload any image (jpg, jpeg, gif, png), and it will automatically convert it into a favicon for you!

Want your photo?

Your business logo?

These things were a little complicated before – there were free sites online that did it for you, but it was easier and quicker to just upload a pretty favicon.. now with this plugin.. all you do is enable the plugin, upload your image, and voila!

If you just want to upload many of the awesome favicons already around, then I still highly recommend MaxBlogPress’s Favicon Generator, as it’s really simple to use, but for custom stuff, this new Favicon Generator has done a great job making it easily available to your wordpress blog without external programs or websites.

Installation

  1. Upload the `favicon-generator` folder to your `/wp-content/plugins/` directory.
  2. Make sure that the `favicon-generator` folder and the `favicon-generator/uploads` folder have their permissions set to 777.
  3. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress.

Examples:

HappyChes Becomes Favicon Generator Turns into: PennyButler.com

Facebook for Business Becomes Favicon Generator Turns into: Facebook for Business

You might have to experiment with different images until it looks the way you want it, I don’t have many good quality images to begin with, so as you see from the examples below, sometimes unclear photos just don’t look quite right as a favicon, but for creating a quick custom-favicon this does the job within minutes.

The only hard thing to setup – is that it doesn’t create the "uploads" folder automatically in the plugin directory, and the directories need 777 attributes, so after you have uploaded favicon-generator, you need to go into your FTP program (I use 3D-Ftp), create the "uploads" folder, then set permissions on both the ‘favicon-generator’ and ‘uploads’ directories to 777.

Also, even though it supports png’s apparently – I had trouble with getting PNG’s to work without a screen full of errors:

But both gifs and jpgs worked fine for me.. so I’m not too worried.
