What would people say about you if you could turn a smoker into a non-smoker in one session of 17 minutes using hypnosis?
What would they be willing to pay you, if you could get them to change life-long patterns of overeating, in as little as 18 minutes? Jeffrey Stephens thinks you can, and will show you actual videos of him and his students in action:

If you are interested in personal development you will no doubt have heard of a science or school of thought called NLP. Although it has been around for a number of decades, still relatively little is known by the average person about what it is, how it works and the power it has to instigate positive changes in a person’s life. This article will explore NLP and look at how it is able to produce such profound results in human behavior and ultimately goal achievement.

NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. It is a science that was created by two men in the 70’s, a mathematician and a linguist by the names of Richard Bandler and John Grinder. The name was created as Neuro refers to the brain, Linguistic refers to the study of words language while programming refers to the ability of our mind to be programmed into creating the results and behaviors we desire. In other words NLP is essentially about the study of the way language patterns can be used to program our brains to achieve certain outcomes.

NLP is used for many reasons and among many types of individually. From business people, to athletes, to students, to parents and much more, NLP is recognized by many achievers and authorities as being an amazingly effective way to elicit behavioral changes such as eliminating phobias or addictions, enhance performance, improve focus and increase productivity.

There are a few elements of NLP that are particularly exciting and that are generally the causes of the most radical results it produces.

NLP recognizes that behavior is the result of our emotional state at any given time. The distinction is then made that by altering that emotional state through effective inner communication and representation, we can alter that behavior.

This inner communication can come in many forms, prominent of which is that of mental imagery. NLP recognizes that any state we can be in, any way we can feel can be recreated by identifying the mental imagery that has previously accompanied their occurrence. For example a feeling of blissfulness can be created by manipulating the mental imagery you currently hold of a time in your life when you felt that same feeling.

This theory becomes particularly powerful by what in NLP is called modeling. Modeling suggests that we can emulate the behavior of any individual in any situation by identifying the state they are in when they produce that behavior and the modalities that accompany and create that state. Behavior, skill, emotion of any kind is literally transferable as though it’s on a CD that we can insert into our minds and play whenever we like!

And this is just the beginning. NLP is an exciting and constantly developing science that holds many keys to influencing behavior and the quality of human life.

How often have we said that:

? Part of me wants to leave my job, but part of me says stay; or

? Part of me wants to sing, but part of me is scared I’ll make a fool of myself.

Neuro linguistic programming NLP is perfect for these kind of inner debates. It offers several techniques to help us negotiate with ourselves and find the perfect answer to these types of dilemmas.

One NLP technique that is widely used for issues of this kind is the so-called Visual Squash. It works as follows:

? The Visual Squash takes the two separate “parts” of us that want two different outcomes

? We represent these parts as two different visual images

? We hold each image in one of our two hands

? We ask one part what its intention is, what it wants for us when it wants us to behave a certain way, for example what do I get by singing? Perhaps pleasure.

? We continue to ask for higher and higher positive intentions for the part. Perhaps the pleasure brings me joy, and the joy brings me peace.

? We then ask the other part for its positive intention for not wanting me to sing. Perhaps it wants to protect me. Protection brings safety and safety brings peace.

? As we continue the exercise we may want to use other NLP techniques such as association, perceptual positions etc to build rapport between the “parts”

? As the parts “negotiate” and reach agreement, we can encourage the hands to move together to form a higher, combined, new “part”

? We can then encourage this new part to be brought back into the body and an inner integration can be achieved.

The problem that sometimes occurs in running the traditional NLP Visual Squash is that the unconscious mind does not fully engage in the process, and no real integration occurs. Those skilled in hypnosis can see this by the way the client’s hands move.

That is why here on our NLP Training in New York, we teach what we call In-Depth NLP. In-Depth NLP uses principles of hypnosis to fully engage the unconscious mind in NLP exercises. We teach In-Depth NLP with a certified hypnosis trainer, to ensure that hypnotic principles are used.

In order to use the Visual Squash exercise in hypnosis, we first induce trance. Given that the Visual Squash places the competing “parts” on opposite hands, and uses hand movement to produce parts integration, it makes sense to use a hypnotic trance induction that utilizes the hypnosis principles of arm catalepsy or arm levitation.

Using arm catalepsy or arm levitation (or both) as the hypnotic induction already transfers control of the arm(s) to the unconscious mind, in hypnosis. It is therefore a small step, once hypnotic trance is induced, to suggest to the unconscious mind that the arms can and will move hypnotically, as integration takes place.

The trained hypnotist can and will see the arms move in a hypnotic manner, quite different from conscious movement, if the conscious mind is fully involved in the technique.

These are the principles of In-Depth NLP; to fully and completely engage the unconscious mind in the change process. By doing so, we generate change that is more compelling than exercises where the conscious mind has more control.

To learn In-Depth NLP take our In-Depth NLP course here in New York.

In my last article I introduced Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) as a great tool to use for changing subconscious programming. In this article, I’ll introduce you to Neuro Linguistic Programming (or NLP) and give you an NLP technique you can use yourself to change an unwanted or unproductive program or eliminate an unwanted habit.

NLP therapy is of a form of psychotherapy which draws on NLP techniques. Psychotherapists trained in these NLP techniques, are also trained in several other areas like cognitive therapy, and will draw from this as required. People come to these psychotherapists to change or ‘fix’ some area of their lives and the therapists use an NLP technique or several techniques to help them modify their internal language, so that they can reprogram the patient with more useful and productive internal motives.

The meta-model NLP technique is a set of specifying questions or language patterns designed to challenge and expand them limits to a person’s model of the world. This NLP technique is based on detecting the distortions, deletions and generalizations in the patient’s language. The NLP technique endeavors to pinpoint the reasons why something is bad in the patient, and then to change that meaning.

For example an NLP technique for a person with post traumatic stress disorder – the person might be saying something like ‘why did this happen to me’. It is the psychotherapists job to find out what the patient’s meaning of ‘this’ is, and why it is so toxic to their mental state at the present time, then to the employ the NLP technique to alter the meaning of the event so that it is something more logical and manageable to the patient. In the patients mind, they might think that they caused the death of a loved one because they told them to go and get milk from the supermarket, and the person died in a car accident on the way there. This type of thinking is highly toxic and using the NLP technique the therapist should attempt to change it to something like – your husband died in a car accident which was in no way your fault, you can’t beat fate.

This NLP technique is highly valuable to any psychotherapist, but can also be beneficial to everyone who is interested in helping others or themselves. This is not the only NLP technique out there, many others do exist, and they are as valuable, of not more that this NLP technique. If you would like to learn more about any NLP technique then the internet is one of the best resources, there is a wide array of information on hypnosis that can be of great benefit. Take the time to have a look around and find out how you can improve your life.

This article is about the many different ways we can trip ourselves up in setting goals, particularly with New Year Resolutions and what you can do to change.

Many people evaluate their lives and set new patterns around the New Year. There are several ways that this can deliberately set you up to fail.

Often this is done because there is an expectation from others that you should set resolutions at this time of year. Also there is often a sense of giving things up or a judgment about not having succeeded the previous year. Typically these type of resolutions have the word ‘must’ associated with them. Here are a few examples I have collected over the years as an NLP Coach:

I must change jobs
I must be able to get into this new dress by February
I must do this, give up that…and so on. I’m sure you get the idea.

This approach has a few pitfalls. How committed is the person to their goals if they feel forced in to them? The judgments and the sense of giving things up attaches negative emotions to the goals so they don’t seem like fun or excitement. Is it any wonder that so many people fail with New Year Resolutions before the end of January?

NLP Techniques – A Solution

Three elements of NLP Techniques include examining intention behind behavior, emotional state and belief changes. By taking these three elements we can start looking at our New Year Resolutions differently.

Goal Setting and Intention

By examining what we gain from our goals, who they are actually for and why we want them some interesting things sometimes fall out. The motivation to succeed or not comes from this element.

Emotions – The Secret to Success

Have you ever seen or experienced the situation where the closer you got to success the more anxious you got about it? And then possibly fell at the last hurdle? The problem with being too emotionally attached to your goals might lead to failure. How well would your crops grow if you were constantly digging them up to see how far they had got?

NLP Techniques – Belief Changes

What you believe about yourself and the world around you will determine your success or failure. Any NLP Practitioner Training will show you a whole number of techniques for changing beliefs, letting go of limiting beliefs and installing empowering one.

Using these NLP processes you can ensure that the goals you set and the New Year Resolutions that you take on are meaningful and that you will succeed. But the real power for making big sweeping changes to your life comes from NLP Coaching Systems.

NLP BreakThrough Coaching Process

Many coaches are also NLP Practitioners and they have integrated some powerful tools into their coaching practice. But there are a few very skilled Hypnosis and NLP Trainers that have developed the NLP BreakThrough Coaching Process that can help in making serious and deep changes in a person’s life.

This highly specialized NLP Coaching process starts by examining your goals, expectations, unconscious behaviors and repeat patterns of behaviour. Through this we can determine the key limiting beliefs and negative emotions that will let you really achieve anything you want. Then through systematic Interventions you can let go of the past and embrace powerful new ways of being. The whole process usually takes as little as three or four hours. Many people that are serious about their goals and achievements have taken this route to success.

When you think about how you and the people around you set their New Year Resolutions you might be considering doing things differently. A little imagination and creative thought might give you the opportunity to achieve more in the next twelve months than you have in the last twelve years. How much of a result would that be for you?

NLP is a methodology that was created to model the excellence of others. The basic idea was to be able to replicate the skills and abilities of experts.

Most of the time modeling is all about taking a small slice of ability and working out how an expert does it. For example how a good sales professional opens the conversation, how they handle objections or close deals. This article is about some ideas that I have about keeping going despite problems and pitfalls. It is about maintaining focus, vision and motivation over long periods of time.

I have known Romilla Ready, the co-author of NLP for Dummies for a long time, and I have learnt a lot from her just by watching her published her first book, Neurolinguistic Programming for Dummies.

It took Romilla over a year to get the publisher interested. During that period, she lost her original co-author. Once through these problems, she not only had to set about writing her first book. But she also took it to be in the UK’s best-selling Dummies book. Now the publisher has asked her to write the NLP for dummies workbook, which will be on sale in April 2008.

The whole thing took a considerable amount of time, there were many setbacks, and it was interesting to notice how Romilla maintained her motivation to see the project through. Here are a few of the things that I’ve learned through Romilla’s experience.

Having strong values and the big vision is typical of Romilla’s life. Neurolinguistic Programming for Dummies is only a small part of a grand plan that Romilla has for a affecting global change. This book is only the first part of a range of books, DVDs, to increase the reach and provide a positive change the world. When you are not particularly motivated to do the next task, would it be easier if you could connect with your purpose or mission in life? Perhaps see how this small task relates to the bigger picture, and how it moves you forward? By being able to connect what you are doing to the big picture helps with motivation.

Even when writing the book Romilla was having ideas and thoughts about the second book and all the other things that she wanted to get done. This certainly helped her to stay motivated and keeping this step, in proportion.

Another thing I noticed about Romilla was that she took this as a learning experience. She was constantly telling me about how much she was learning about writing, NLP, publishing, marketing, and all of this was coming through the experience of writing this book. This is a great attitude to have because it gives you the chance to ask questions, not to be perfect, learned from mistakes and move on. Any new enterprise will contain setbacks, mistakes and frustrations. But having a learning attitude towards what you’re doing will allow you to gain experience and move on from any setbacks.

Something else, I noticed about Romilla, is that she was writing little, but very often. This developed consistency and discipline, as well as habit. This approach is often better than blocking huge amount of time for a specific task. It stops you going in to overwhelm, it sets up a habit and keep your motivation going.

NLP Modelling is really about looking at what’s underneath the behaviour of a person. It is about their values, their beliefs and strategies. In this way, we can find out what drives them to be good at what they do. A good NLP Practitioner Course will show you how to do this.

Neurolinguistic Programming for Dummies is a great introduction book, and you can find various NLP Techniques for you to try on my website.

Part the First

Marin-style NLP has always been something that is difficult to characterize, especially when it comes to explaining how it is different. It has much in common with conventional NLP, yet it is tremendously not-like-that at the same time. So, from time to time I would like to share a little with you about where our forms of this wonderful work come from.

Their foundation is solidly in the amazing work of John Grinder and Richard Bandler in the 1970s. After all, even one of our Holographic NLP-level presuppositions is: “No matter how cosmic it gets, it’s still all V’s, A’s and K’s.” We never get too far away from this awareness, and when we do we return to it pretty quickly.

Although it is based in the NLP of the 1970s (what Robert Dilts calls “1st generation NLP), Marin NLP is not about techniques and procedures for techniques. Marin NLP is greatly filtered through my (Carl’s) experience of Dr. Jonathan Rice. Jonathan was my main teacher. He was the only one of Richard and John’s early students to be a credentialed therapist and Ph.D. psychologist. Jonathan added 1970s NLP into the work he was already doing with his clients in his practice in Carmel, just down the road from Santa Cruz. He studied with and stayed around John and Richard not because of their great charm, but because he watched them get results with people that were beyond what he knew how to do. However, Jonathan did not throw away his training and experience as a psychologist.

“Jonathan-style NLP” is heavy on attention to hypnotic language, elegant use of the outcome frame, and close calibration of physiology-especially!!-physiology. Jonathan was determined to teach himself to use Richard and John’s remarkable discoveries about accessing cues to observe and understand the structure of his own clients’ experience. Jonathan never stopped refining and extending this part of the NLP model. For example, the “what stops you” question is something we owe in great part to Jonathan’s persistence and creativity. In the earliest day’s, “what stops you?” was asked for information about content (as in, “Just ask the question and write down what they say”), not for the representational physiology of unconscious safety patterning. “What are the V’s and A’s that are making the K’s?” is Jonathan’s question also. (He didn’t remember saying it, but he thought it was a great one when I brought it up, years later.)

“Jonathan-style NLP” is also something that is usually done seated, not standing, and it expects the practitioner to improvise and constantly adapt, so that no two sessions are identical, and the techniques, if they can be called that, are generally hidden in the flow of life-revising rapport. Moreover, the practitioner seeks to serve the client, not to impress him or her with the practitioner’s amazing personal power. This should all be instantly and hugely recognizable to our NLP Marin students.

I spent years switched with Jonathan. Anyone who knows Jon can sense this in me, any time I am teaching or working with clients. I am greatly indebted to him.

Carl Buchheit, MA, has been the Training Director at NLP Marin (http://www.NLPMarin.com) since 1993, and has deeply been involved with NLP for over thirty years. Informal calculations suggest that Carl has probably taught more NLP classes, and worked with more clients, than any other teacher/practitioner.

Top performers in every area from sports through arts to business have coaches to help them reach and maintain the highest levels of performance.

The benefits of coaching

Just imagine a combination of your best friend, your most cherished teacher, your most hard-nosed manager, and your most positive guru available and committed to your personal development.

How much more will you achieve when these resources are available to you?

A coach will provide you all of this and more.

Seems a bit like counseling or therapy?

There are superficial similarities between coaching and therapy but there are fundamental differences. Coaching essentially is about commitment and development in the present moment to achieve future goals and outcomes.

Many forms of therapy are about fixing problems from the past. In coaching you might discuss past issues but this is only in the context of future goals.

Are there different forms of coaching?

There are many different names for different forms of coaching. Lots of coaches and coach schools have marketing names for different types of coaching. In broad terms you can fit most forms of coaching into five categories.

Peak Performance Coaching

This is very common with sports where a coach is generally a specialist in a particular sport. Peak performance coaches also appear in business, a sales coach for example.

Often peak performance coaches will have specialist skills such as NLP or Hypnosis. Many coaches have benefited from a good NLP Training Course.

You will find coaches working in markets that they have credibility in. For example I get a lot of clients from the coaching, training and NLP community simply because they are circles I move in and I am known in them. As a result I have more experience and reference clients in these Coaching is usually about personal discovery, so coaches do not need skills and experience from the context they are coaching in. markets. But since coaching is more about the client’s personal exploration and goals it is not necessary for coaches to have experience of the context.

Life Coaching

Life coaches cover a broader area and might be looking at different areas of a client’s life and their relationship to each other.

Executive Coaching

Executives coaching is usually about the challenges and issues of leadership and can cover anything from personal style, stress reduction to finding your passion for the role. Lots of executive coaches will use a personality profiling tool as a vehicle for their client’s to explore and develop their outcomes.

Special events Coaching

Some coaches will specialize in a niche area like presentations or writing and publishing books. Often they have specific experience, skills or qualifications in the area and they may not conform to traditional coaching models because of their ‘insider’ knowledge.

Accelerated Success BreakThrough Coaching Sessions

This is a highly specialized area of coaching involving leading edge psychological, NLP and Hypnosis tools to facilitate great changes very quickly. There are only a small number of coaches skilled in this area and also not all clients are suitable for this approach. Hence there is a lot of pre-qualification before using this form of coaching. For those it suits it has great impact very quickly.

What happens on coaching programmes?

Coaches are very individual in their approach. Also coaching is more about the relationship between client and coach so there is no set format or approach. Some coaches work just by telephone and / or email, whilst others stick exclusively to face to face interventions. A lot is Dependant on how you set up the coaching programme from the initial consultation.

Any coaching programme should start with an initial consultation where the programme can be set up. This would include duration of the programme, the sessions and overall outcomes and a whole raft of other areas that your coach will take you through.

After this typically sessions will be about updating from the previous session, clarifying outcomes for the current sessions and then targeted discussions of the current issues. The session will finish with action plans for the client to take away and complete. That said each session can be as individual as the client and the coach want.

Finding a coach

Since coaching is such an individual context it is difficult to fix criteria for finding a coach. Although some general rules of thumb do apply.

Coaching is all about a relationship between the client and the coach. Therefore in the initial consultation if the client does not feel they have great rapport that will allow them to be open and comfortable then it probably is not worth continuing.

It is also worth talking to your prospective coach about previous clients, experience and approach. Often when picking a coach it would be worth talking to previous clients.

The right coach will give you great value for money and could take you further than you had ever achieved without their support. It makes sense to spend a little time to ensure you get the right coach for you. You can find more in depth articles on finding a great coach on my website.

What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming?

NLP is a multi-dimensional methodology of communication, personal development and change. It seeks to understand the dynamics and interaction of the human nervous system and mind (neuro), language and communication (linguistic) and the organisation of human thought processes and patterns (programming) to effect positive and beneficial personal change.

If we were to think of the brain as a computer running a large number of ‘programs’ (the brain’s ’software’), NLP teaches the client to reorganise or re-pattern the way that these ‘programs’ are run to enable dramatic transformations and changes to take place.

The Historical Development of NLP

The development of NLP began in the 1970s when Dr. Richard Bandler & John Grinder set out to understand and model what it was that made the most effective communicators so effective.

Bandler and Grinder believed that therapists were among the most effective communicators as they were able to initiate amazing transformations within their clients apparently just through talking with them. With this in mind, they set about modelling some of the leading therapists of the day, including Fritz Perls (the founder of Gestalt therapy), Virginia Satir (a renowned family therapist) and Milton H. Erickson M.D. (the world’s leading hypnotherapist at that time). In modelling the verbal and non-verbal patterns used by these most elegant and persuasive communicators and proponents of personal change, they identified a variety of patterns that could be used to replicate the astounding results they had observed in the work of these pre-eminent therapists. NLP started out, therefore, as a field to study and model the structure of excellence in communication. This approach to understanding the structure of subjective experience, language and thought processes became known as Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

The field of NLP has continued to develop and be refined over the last thirty years and is now widely used in many areas of change work and personal development. It is not simply a technology to fix problems but seeks to go far beyond that to facilitate ‘generative’ change i.e. to empower the client to make improvements in all areas of their life.

What can I expect from seeing a therapist or life coach trained in NLP?

A session with an NLP trained therapist or life coach will typically be quite conversational with the practitioner using a range of language skills and strong observational and listening skills to elicit precisely how the client is experiencing ‘reality’ and using transformational and hypnotic communication to help the client change their subjective experience of ‘reality’ to gain new perspectives and become aware of the wide range of possibilities and opportunities that are available.

In contrast to many approaches to therapy, NLP works on an assumption that old experiences or traumas do not have to be relived in order for change to occur. NLP believes that all experience is subjective and that we respond to our internal representation of events, not to the events themselves. Experience has a structure inside our minds so if we change the structure, we change the experience.

As human beings, we are driven by a large number of automatic ‘patterns’ or ‘programs’ that are largely outside of conscious awareness. An NLP practitioner will concentrate less on ‘why’ the client is experiencing the issues or problems they are experiencing and more on ‘how’ the client uses certain ‘patterns’ and ‘programs’ to hold the issue, problem or limiting belief in place.

So, the practitioner will focus on understanding the context of the problem (when/where does it occur… when doesn’t it occur?), the process the client goes through in order to produce the problem (what triggers the problem off… when is everything OK?), and the structure of the problem within the clients mind (does the client criticise themselves inside in a harsh tonality first, get a feeling in the stomach and then perhaps make pictures in their mind of things going wrong?).

In much the same way that Bandler & Grinder modelled excellence, an NLP practitioner will seek to understand the structure of their problem and work with the client to interrupt or spoil the limiting pattern and replace it with something more useful. Also, the client will undoubtedly have experienced many positive and resourceful states that can be accessed and utilised to overwrite the previously held limiting behaviour or belief ‘programs’.

Human beings are the most amazing learning machines so if we can easily learn limiting behaviours then we can equally easily learn more useful behaviours and access more resourceful emotional states. A good example of this is a phobia. People can develop debilitating phobias from a single bad experience. It is this capacity to learn rapidly that is utilised by an NLP practitioner to eliminate the phobia just as quickly as it was originally acquired.

There are a large number of powerful techniques that NLP practitioners use to change the structure of how the client subjectively experiences reality and to facilitate permanent and positive changes.

Hypnosis will often also play a part during sessions with an NLP practitioner. Hypnosis is a powerful way to ensure that learnings are integrated into the subconscious more quickly and permanently than perhaps could be achieved without hypnosis. Even if a formal trance induction does not take place during your sessions, you can be sure that a skilled NLP practitioner is communicating at many different levels to help facilitate change.

What can NLP be used for?

NLP is successfully used to overcome phobias, addictions and depression, reduce anxiety and stress, eliminate limiting beliefs, gain greater control over emotional states, improve communication, enhance performance, achieve goals, and perhaps most importantly, find ways to increase the amount of happiness and joy people have in their lives.

I recently completed an NLP course and I am now a registered NLP Master Practitioner. My NLP training course, which was with an NLP training company called People Building, has enabled me to set up and practice confidently as a therapist. More importantly, I have learnt valuable life tools which I use and apply to my own life and which has enabled me to experience a refreshed perspective and more flexible ways of feeling and behaving.

I was so inspired with my NLP course that I went on to train further as a Master practitioner. However, just by completing an NLP practitioner course you will learn many things and have a good grounding in NLP, which will allow you to practice. This article discusses just a few of the techniques you will learn during your NLP training.

For anyone that communicates with anyone else (so that’s everyone!) you will be taught how to communicate more effectively by learning how to have better rapport in order to quickly gain a connection with others. You will learn how to understand and read body language and how to enter the world of others to understand them better.

On my NLP training course I also learnt how to change unwanted feelings and behaviors. There are many techniques for achieving this including “Anchoring”, in which you will learn to fire off positive states in others and yourself at will. Via anchoring you can also learn to remove bad feelings associated to triggers from the past.

NLP also teaches you how to understand and utilize the strategies that we each run. Human beings have strategies for everything they do from getting out of bed, to shopping in the supermarket. On an NLP course, you will learn to design and install strategies for yourself and others to rapidly achieve your desired results. As a therapist this often involves understanding how a client runs a strategy for anxiety or stress. In a different setting, such as sales, NLP can teach you how to Illicit someone’s buying strategy or utilize a persons eye movements so that you can understand the strategies they use, and customize your sales techniques for each individual.

NLP has many informal techniques for change, which involve the artful use of language. Examples include utilizing questioning techniques that help a person identify their objectives and learning language patterns that create change in a person’s internal representation. In addition, NLP teaches you how to use language to create trance in others (Milton Model), use your language to get more specificity and deeper meaning within your conversation (Meta Model) and how to influence and negotiate with ease and power. Through the art of conversation, (NLP style!) you can enable others to become solution focused.
